- "His body reacted with the filth ... the rot ... the decay ... to produce a misshapen mockery of life, no longer a man, but a .... Net Thing!"
Net.Thing was Prime Flounder of the Parliament of Nodes and Heir Protector of the Net. What that means in particular is a bit obscure, but in practice, it meant that he was responsible for protecting the Internet from existential threats. In pursuit of this, he joined the trenchcoater meetup in Chicago[2].
