History
As chairman of the Department of Psychology at Dave Thomas Deluxe University in Net.ropolis, Dr. Michael Dahl was threatened with termination because he devoted himself to teaching at the expense of publication. To save his job, Dahl developed an experimental process that would allow him to go without sleep. As a side effect, the procedure caused Dahl to lurch continually from one emotional state to another.
- "And then," Dahl said, in a Bogart-esque deadpan heavy with the weight of several worlds, "I reasoned that I could become more productive if I found a way to make it so that I never had to sleep, see?" His voice grew cheerful again. "By electronically altering my brain, I could teach (giggle) and do research (chuckle) and write (snort) and advocate for social change (guffaw) and -- ha -- carry on a meaningful personal life, with only a few (sniffle) prolonged...side...effects...oh, Lord, I'm depressed."
- —The Adventures of Easily-Discovered Man #31
Dahl later perfected the process, using it on other professors and transforming them into unthinking drones, capable only of publishing research papers and presenting those papers at other universities. His activities were discovered and eventually thwarted by Easily-Discovered Man.
