They Might Be Giants
They Might Be Giants (commonly abbreviated to TMBG) is an American alternative rock duo consisting of John Linnell and John Flansburgh that formed in 1982. Best known for their unconventional and experimental style, the group has found success on the modern rock and CMJ charts, in the children's music genre, and in theme music for several television programs and films.
The group's popularity with LNH Writers has led to many characters, storylines and in-jokes based on the band.
- "What's up with They Might Be Giants and RACC? One of these days I'll have to listen to one of their songs."
- —Arthur Spitzer, in 2005
Usage
The band inspired the LNH members Constellation (and especially his identity as Flood), Particle Man, and Ana Ng; in fact, many of Particle Man's powers are based on They Might Be Giants songs. Two groups of super-villains, They Might Be Villains and Pencil Rain, are also homages to the band. Size-of-the-Entire-Universe Man is a cosmic entity who mediates the universal force of the TheyMightBePowers.
In addition to Constellation and Particle Man, the mini-series Birds Fly took its title from a They Might Be Giants song.
Many LNH characters have identified themselves as They Might Be Giants fans. Easily-Discovered Man Lite wore a They Might Be Giants T-shirt as part of his costume, and all of the songs in the RACCCafe jukebox are by They Might Be Giants.
Other LNH characters (and writers) have often expressed confusion over the constant stream of TMBG references.
- "Well, the thing is, I really have never listened to They Might Be Giants all that much. I'm more of a Rush fan."
- —Substitute Lad, The Adventures of Easily-Discovered Man #12
