History
Content warning: *deep breath* internalized fatphobia, body horror, alcoholism, domestic abuse, suicide
Maggie Bernard was a fat, gothy young woman who hated her body, a college student majoring in science. There were reasons for this beyond just being a fat girl with terrible friends and an abusive alcoholic mother, who was still raw with grief over her father's death: every night, she would transform into a horrifying acidic blob monster. After dissolving one of her friends, she became consumed with guilt and decided to atone by joining the LNH, but couldn't bring herself to do it.
After a failed suicide attempt, she encountered an incredibly talkative young man named Tyler Bridge. He helped pull her out of her depression somewhat. Then she turned into a blob and dissolved him too. She fell into another guilt/depression spiral, only to wake up in the morning and find Tyler sitting in the kitchen eating breakfast with her mother. He was a ghost, who had been dead to begin with.
Together they got wrapped up in a tangled and horrific murder mystery surrounding Maggie's dead friend, at the end of which they battled a demon. By now, Maggie had faced down her guilt and decided to join the Legion after all.
Her troubles were only beginning.
Net.Heroes On Parade
Maggie moved into the LNHQ with Tyler as her roommate. She immediately grew close to Lilly Paschall, AKA Groundswell, who like her struggled with involuntary transformations.
They were drawn into the group of new-ish net.heroes and fellow travelers who banded together to save Michette Duclos from the Terrible Ones. Attacked by a demonic fetus, Maggie defeated it by absorbing it into her blob form. On her next case, she used her transformations to go undercover in a freak show.
Even though she was flourishing as a net.hero, she was still tormented by feelings of ugliness and worthlessness. One night, Chatillon appeared to her and offered her a deal: if she stood by and let Chatillon take Michette's mystic lunchbox, Chatillion would take away her weight and give her the gift of self-confidence. Maggie refused.
Speed Richardson, though, had accepted the deal, and thus Chatillon was able to overcome her and take Michette. An enraged Maggie told Speed she loved him and had been tempted to take Chatillon's deal so he'd love her in return, but refused. This revelation inspired him to act as a true hero and face off against Chatillon. When Speed was put on trial, Maggie was the only one who voted in his favor, and when he went back to Kansas City she tearfully bid him goodbye.
Personality
She started out as someone who was self-loathing and judgmental, convinced she was worthless and no one could find her attractive. As she grew closer to Tyler and others in the course of her investigation, she came to see things differently.
