History

A young man took up meditation to manage his anxiety. This lead him to discovering the ways of magic, and while he refused to join the Net.Trenchcoat Brigade due to not wanting to get caught up in their drama[1], it did lead him to the original Occultism Kid.

The young man became his apprentice, and by the time the original Kid died in the Cry.Sig, he was a master of the occult. He took his mentor's place, becoming the second Occultism Kid, and the LNH's resident expert on magick.

He played a significant role in the LNH's early cosmic battles, such as the fight against Dimwiticus and the Power Liefeld. During this battle, he created flight rings for the entire LNH, but all except Particle Man's dissipated over time when they forgot about them.

Charged by the Dvandom Stranger with retrieving the Net.ronomicon from alt.horror.cthulhu, Occultism Kid built a techno-magickal interdimensional travel device, the TANDI. But the TANDI malfunctioned, which caused the original Occultism Kid to return to life[2]. He retired and took the name "The August One," becoming the second Occultism Kid's mentor. However, in time, the August One died a more natural death, and entered the cycle of reincarnation.

During Beige Countdown, Occultism Kid was manipulated by Bart the Dark Receptionist into opening the Book of Deus ex Machinas, liberating the Bryttle Brothers. He felt great guilt over this, and fought to find a way to stop the Bryttles, ending up with him taking a cosmic journey inside the Insanity Gauntlet. Within, he struggled with his own sanity and the temptation of taking the pragmatic-but-unethical way out. In the end, he managed to find a third option, using every bit of cosmic force at his disposal to create hope for the Looniverse.

He took a long vacation after that. Afterwards, he took up training Kid Occultism Kid, the reincarnation of the original. But when the power of Neme.sys threatened the world, he had to make another hard choice, giving Ultimate Ninja a token for the Cosmic Bus so he could leave their fictional reality, transcending and becoming part of the imagination of the Real World, and helping recruit Nina Yamashiro as his replacement.

This weighed heavily on his mind, and during the quarantine for the sabertooth pandemic, he had little else to think about. He realized that his life had stalled out, his personal narrative unable to move to its next step. So when he accompanied Catalyst Lass on a journey into the underworld for the soul of Token Girl, he volunteered to take her place. He was transformed into a being of pure astral matter, and bonded with Obscure Trivia Lad; and together, the two of them headed to the Deep Omnilooniverse, among the worlds he had borne...

Personality

Easygoing. A bit shy unless dealing with matters of the mystical.

As he lived through tragedies, he took on a grimmer outlook. He could be a bit ruder and more abrasive sometimes, but he was still helpful, and still trying to be optimistic.

Powers and Abilities

Occultism Kid was the master of all things occult, with considerable mystic powers, including the ability to command demons. He owned of a number of items of power, including the TANDI, a magical staff with incredible destructive force, and a trenchcoat which could levitate and serve as a weapon. He carried magical potions on drawstring pouches on his belt.

He no longer has any of those items, or indeed a body, but probably has some Constellation-ish abilities in his bond with Obscure Trivia Lad, and certainly holds on to all his mystic knowledge.

Appearance

Wore a long brown (sometimes white, because magic) trenchcoat, usually over casual clothes.

His voice is "low and dark and badly abused, like Tom Waits might have sounded with a hangover"[3]. (He likely sounded different pre-Beige.)

Currently, looks like a speck of silver light.

Relationships

Though well-liked by his fellow LNHers, Occultism Kid seems to have had few close friends, notably wReamhack and Obscure Trivia Lad. He was one of the few other LNHers Particle Man was comfortable around and mentored him a bit; they played Magic: The Gathering together. At one point he had a running feud with Master Blaster which turned into more of a friendly rivalry; they frequently trained against each other in the Peril Room. Kid Occultism Kid was his apprentice, and in many ways, his closest confidant.

His room in the LNHQ is guarded by a cantankerous demon, the Door Warden.

Alt.ernate versions of him include Baron Occultism of the Mirror Looniverse.

Appearances

Footnotes

  1. According to Miss Ng in Action #2, the NTB would repeatedly ask him to join and he would turn them down. Ravencroft Wicked claimed they threw him out, but she's not the most trustworthy witness.
  2. In a "temporal undoing" manner, similar to the effects of the Reversion Ray ProjectorFootnote Girl
  3. LNH Comics Presents #506Footnote Girl
  4. ...sort of. What seems to have happened (early archives are spotty) is that August Paul Yang, creator of the original Occultism Kid, disappeared after the Two-and-a-Half Month Gap, but writers kept using the character since he was still on the roster; Josh Geurink decided to take on the name in early 1993, posting as "Occultism Kid of the LNH"; people pointed out that taking on someone else's self-insert persona as your own could lead to problems, and plans were made to make them two separate characters; and in All Things Dark and Scary, it was retconned in that all appearances of Occultism Kid between that story and the CPDC were Occultism Kid II.
